Welcome to Year 3!

Staff

Mrs Gardner - Class Teacher

Miss Worsley - Class Teaching Assistant

Welcome to Year Three! I hope you have had a lovely Summer break and are rearing to go on our new and exciting learning journey together! Each year, we teachers start out so hopeful and excited to begin the new journey with your child. We come in with hopes and dreams of what the year will be like - and all of those visions include good things for your child. Whilst we are willing to put in the effort, the hours, the creativity, the enthusiasm - having your support results in your child's overall success! Moving from Key Stage One into Key Stage Two can sometimes be a little daunting for some children. At North Walkden, we ensure a smooth transition by building on the learning and experiences from Year Two. Miss Worlsey and I are really looking forward to this year and to working closely with you and your child.

Autumn 1

English                                                                       Image result for the boy with the bronze axe

Our English learning this half term is heavily based on the text ‘The Boy with the Bronze Axe’ which gives a strong link to our Topic work. Kathleen Fidler’s classic story is set in the ancient Stone Age village of Skara Brae on Orkney. It is a fascinating and vividly portrayed story of life nearly 3,000 years ago and provides us with ample opportunities to develop our writing skills in exciting and innovative ways! Our first writing journeys allows for us to become familiar with one of the main characters in the story – Tenko as we learn how to structure an excellent descriptive piece of writing.

Our writing will be strongly supported by ensuring we focus heavily on spelling, punctuation and grammar and weekly spelling tests, alongside discrete editing and proofing sessions will ensure we achieve our very best.

Guided Reading sessions will continue to take place daily. We ask that you continue to encourage your child to read at home and for you to comment in their Reading Record.

Maths

We begin our Autumn term exploring place value and number. Understanding the number system is necessary prerequisite knowledge for any number work. Children will be consolidating their understanding of partitioning numbers in different ways and use this knowledge to mentally calculate using addition and subtraction. This half term, children will also measure distances using a variety of tools and units and record these measurements. We will then measure and draw 2D shapes. This allows for children to apply their place value and mental calculation knowledge in the context of length.

Topic – ‘Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.’

Our topic this half term takes us back in time to The Stone Age. Children will learn about the three main periods of prehistoric Britain and describe the ways of life of people throughout different ages. We will use a range of sources to find out about Skara Brae and make a timeline of events and developments.

Science – Animals including Humans – How can Usain Bolt move so quickly?

During our Science sessions this half term, we will be exploring our bodies with a particular focus on healthy eating and the importance of a balanced diet.

Music

This half term, Year 3 will be developing our singing skills which allows for children to express their emotions and sharpens their ability to communicate.

PE

This half term Year 3 will be developing our skills through Invasion Games. Please ensure your child has a full PE kit in school at all times and that it is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Art

Our Art focus this half term is strongly linked to our Topic of the Stone Age. We will be creating cave paintings, making our own paint from natural materials and looking at artwork related to Stonehenge

To look around the classroom and talk about your child’s new class, there will be a‘Meet the teacher’ after school on Monday 11thSeptember at 3.30pm.

Many thanks
