Year Three 2017 - 2018

Mrs Gardner

Welcome to Year 3!

Mrs Gardner - Class Teacher

Miss Worsley - Class Teaching Assistant

Welcome to Year Three! I hope you have had a lovely Half term  break and are rearing to go on our new and exciting learning journey together! Each year, we teachers start out so hopeful and excited to begin the new journey with your child. We come in with hopes and dreams of what the year will be like - and all of those visions include good things for your child. Whilst we are willing to put in the effort, the hours, the creativity, the enthusiasm - having your support results in your child's overall success! Moving from Key Stage One into Key Stage Two can sometimes be a little daunting for some children. At North Walkden, we ensure a smooth transition by building on the learning and experiences from Year Two. Miss Worlsey and I are really looking forward to this year and to working closely with you and your child.

Our English learning this half term continues to be heavily based on the text ‘The Boy with the Bronze Axe’ which gives a strong link to our Topic work. Kathleen Fidler’s classic story is set in the ancient Stone Age village of Skara Brae on Orkney. It is a fascinating and vividly portrayed story of life nearly 3,000 years ago and provides us with ample opportunities to develop our writing skills in exciting and innovative ways!

Our writing will be strongly supported by ensuring we focus heavily on spelling, punctuation and grammar and weekly spelling tests, alongside discrete editing and proofing sessions will ensure we achieve our very best.

Guided Reading sessions will continue to take place daily. We ask that you continue to encourage your child to read at home and for you to comment in their Reading Record.

In our topic work this half term, children will be learning about volcanoes, earthquakes and hurricanes as well as looking at what rocks tell us about the way the earth was formed. Children will be producing lots of cross-curricular work linked to our topic and our focus class text. This includes, artwork, design technology and writing. Any extra research children can do at home would benefit their learning in the classroom.
