Year 2: Autumn Term 2 Newsletter- November 2017

Welcome back! Our exciting new topic this half term is ‘The Arctics’. This topic will be closely linked to learning in Literacy where the children will use non-fiction books to find out facts about polar animals, discuss the key features of a non-fiction text and make their very own information book. We will also be writing letters linked to the book ‘Dear Polar Bear’, writing lists of things to take on a polar adventure and much more.

This work will also be closely linked to developing Geography skills where the children will be locating the Arctic and Antarctic on globes, maps and using Google earth. They will also be looking at how far away the polar regions are and which animals live there. We will be reading the book ‘Meerkat Mail’ and asking ‘Why can’t a meerkat live in the North Pole?’ And finally, as Christmas draws nearer, we will be talking about another very special person who lives in the North Pole with his Elves.

In Science the children will continue looking at the topic ‘Materials’ and how they can be changed. Learning experiences will include identifying different types of materials; sorting them into groups and describing them using scientific vocabulary; developing an understanding of natural and man-made materials; exploring magnets; looking at how water changes state and finally carrying out their own investigation with ice balloons. Please take a look at the science activities for this topic on www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips

If you have any resources at home which would enhance our topic work please label them and send in with your child to be returned at the end of this half term.

In all numeracy the children will continue to be encouraged to solve problems in the context of numbers. They will describe the puzzle or problem in their own words or use numbers, practical resources or diagrams to help. The children already have their individual Mtahs targets but can develop a greater understanding in many real life situations e.g.

  • Looking at patterns in house numbers
  • Weighing ingredients when baking and carrying shopping
  • Adding up when looking at prices in the supermarket.
  • Looking at real life shapes, all around us
  • Walking to and from school could include practice in recall of addition and subtraction facts.

Homework in Year Two

Alongside reading as much as possible at home, children in Year 2 have weekly spellings to practise. These are given to the children on a Friday and the spelling quiz takes place on the following Friday. Each child has their own individual challenge of improving on the previous weeks score. We celebrate these achievements during our end of the week classroom award ceremony.

Some weeks, a Maths or English task may be sent home in the children’s homework books on a Friday. This will be work to reinforce and support the work already completed in class during that week. Please encourage the children to complete this short task and return it to the homework box by the following Wednesday morning. Please feel free to comment on the tasks set as homework. It is always helpful to know if the children find the work particularly challenging or enjoyable.

General Reminders…

The children will doing PE on a Friday this half term with Mr Tierney. Please ensure your child has their correct PE kit in school and that all items are clearly labelled.

If you have any messages please write them in your child’s reading record or feel free to speak directly to me.

The children can access their own water throughout the day and have fruit at snack time.

If your child needs new reading books, then please encourage them to put it in our 'please change my book basket'. This basket is checked each day by a member of staff.

I am looking forward to all the exciting events this half term has to offer!

Autumn 1- Great Fire Of London

Welcome back! I hope you have had a lovely time over the summer and I am sure you are now ready to start the new school year, so welcome to Year 2! Our aim is to ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from year one to year two. The Year 2 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that the children have already had. Mrs Drench will continue to support within the year two classroom and we are delighted to welcome Mrs Seddon to our KS1 team, along with Miss Hughes who is joining us as a student teacher. We are all looking forward to getting to know you and working together so that we have a very exciting and productive year. I hope that both you and your children enjoy the new challenges and approaches to learning that Year 2 has to offer!

I will be sending home regular school newsletters to keep you updated with what we are learning in class and how you can also help continue your child’s learning at home. To look around the classroom and talk about your child’s new class, there will be a ‘Meet the teacher’ after school on Tuesday 12th September at 3.30pm. I am positive that we will all have a happy and successful year and I am looking forward to meeting you all again.

Please read the Welcome letter and Autumn Newsletter to find out more about Year 2!
