Nursery 'Class of 2016' Autumn 2
Date: 29th Sep 2016 @ 1:59pm
What a busy start to Autumn term 2 in Nursery this week - we have been having lots of fun in class with some spooky Halloween provision. Miss Kelbie has been turned into a frog, a princess and a snail this week! Over the week we read 'Room on the Broom' by Julia Donaldson. We read each page in short individual sessions and then discussed what had happened in the story and what we think might happen next. The Nursery came up with some fabulous ideas and we practised flying on our broomsticks just like the witch in the story. We have been so busy casting spells and mixing potions. Nursery made making marks to represent writing their potions, creating beautiful meaninful pieces of work (their potion mixtures included bats and rats and eyeballs! YUK!)
We noticed that some children were pretending to have magic wands so we decided to set an activity up at the creative table and make our own. The children took ownership of their creations by choosing sticks from outside, i heard lots of lovely mathematical language of size and length being used independently. They then decided on their colour star, and chose ribbons, sequins and beads to decorate. The children added feathers and twisted fiddly pipe cleaners around their sticks for further decoration. Great for their fine motor developement! The photographs do not do them justice - please come and see our magical display in class! but be careful - we may cast a spell on you...
We discussed Diwali - the festival of light. Nursery children celebrated this Hindu festival by creating gorgeous colourful, sparkly lanterns which we have on display on our arch! We had a visit from a child in school who has beautfiful henna patterns painted on her hands. This inspired children to draw around their hands and create patterns just like Mendhi patterns. We added some hand outlines to the drawing area to extend this activity further. The children spoke about our christmas time celebrations in contrast and we discussed how different people celebrate lots of different special times.
Im really proud of how the children have come back into nursery so happy and enthusiastic.
